Co-publisher Wanted

TO
PRINT AND MARKET
The User'sŪ Webster Dictionary

Bids are invited to print and market this fast-selling, well-reviewed Webster's in the U.S. and worldwide under licence from Lexicography, Inc. (owner and publisher). Licence is initially for five years, renewable indefinitely.

No publishing experience is required on the part of the licensee since the publisher will take care of this aspect of the project. Lexicography, Inc. will arrange for periodical revision of the dictionary and supply camera-ready art for press.

Statistics show it is quite possible to sell a million copies annually through retailers in the U.S., Canada, and worldwide. English dictionaries are next only to the Bible in world sales. Periodical revision is all that is required.

General market research data is available from the American Booksellers Association.

THE PRODUCT: The User's Webster Dictionary, 2000 (UWD) is a 5.25" x 8.25" paperback in 1,280 pp. Details at User's Webster. UWD is a revised, expanded, and updated version of The New York Times Everyday Dictionary. See reviews of the NYT dictionary.

THE CREATOR & HIS COMPANY: UWD is the work of Thomas M. Paikeday, a lexicographer with over 40 years full-time experience of researching and compiling American and Canadian English dictionaries for schools and the trade. At website, see "About Us."

YOU INVEST: All you invest in is the production cost (paper, printing, and binding) of UWD which is currently guaranteed at $2.60 per copy based on a print run of 100,000. This is the best quote available in North America, from the printer who did the first printing of this dictionary.

MARKETING: A first printing of 2,000 copies was test-marketed in Canada through the Chapters/Indigo chain of nearly 300 stores and sold quickly at $7.99 with no returns. No advertising or promotion was undertaken. No professional reviews were solicited or published. Licensee will have to sell the dictionary to national bookstore chains, school boards, and state and federal governments (especially GSA, largest purchaser of commercial English dictionaries). Sales in small quantities to individual outlets may not be worth the effort.

U.S. & WORLDWIDE SALES: According to Moseley Associates of New York, publishing consultants, whom we retained in 1999, Under the right circumstances, a deal with a large bookstore chain could result in the sale of hundreds of thousands of this dictionary. Licensee could sell subsidiary rights abroad wherever North American English is used. UWD is especially useful for teaching English as a Second Language.

YOU PAY ROYALTIES: Pay Lexicography, Inc. royalties (negotiable) on a sliding scale based on the cover price of the book. In the publishing industry, it is 10-15% of gross to an author with a raw manuscript that has to be designed, edited, proofread, and prepared for printing. All this has been done for you. In the first year, while you are establishing a viable market for the dictionary and an income base for yourself, Lexicography, Inc. will accept a minimal royalty advance. For subsequent years, a better percentage based on the cover price will have to be negotiated.

YOUR PROFITS: You should be able to break even in the first year, thereafter reaping substantial profits servicing markets you have established. Please get in touch with Lexicography, Inc. for estimates.

WHAT REVIEWERS SAY ABOUT THIS WEBSTER'S: "The User's Webster Dictionary (UWD) is a compact, inexpensive, very usable mass-market paperback dictionary of the everyday vocabulary of North American English.... The coverage of lexemes larger than the word [common idiomatic phrases and sentences such as "The coast is clear"] is extraordinary.... Most English dictionaries enter few of these; one of those that enter the most, Webster's New World Dictionary of American English, Third College Edition (1988), enters or covers only twelve of the same thirty. . . UWD provides users with ready access to needed information about a wide range of words and phrases, in compact and affordable form. With its special attention to collocations, it is an interesting and useful contribution to the resources for answering questions about today's English vocabulary (Edward Gates, Prof. Emeritus, Indiana State University, in Dictionaries, Journal of the Dictionary Society of North America, 2003, pp. 274-280). "Here, at last, is a dictionary that is up to date, easy to use and fun to read," -John Robert Colombo, author/editor of over 100 reference books.

"Your decades of experience, combined with your strong sense that a dictionary should be above all useful, have paid off . . . I almost wish I could do another dictionary, so as to steal your innovations." -Prof. Emeritus Robert L. Chapman, Drew University, lexicographer (1960-2002).

"Its unique emphasis on collocations makes this dictionary particularly useful to new learners of English." -David B. Guralnik, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, Webster's New World dictionaries (1941-2000), Simon & Schuster, Cleveland, OH.

"This works! And, it is a dictionary that will offer home, school, and professional readers and writers accurate definitions in context good for years to come." -Prof. William R. Martin, Dept. of Education, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA.
