Licensee could sell subsidiary rights abroad wherever North American English is used. UWD is especially useful for teaching English as a Second Language. YOU PAY ROYALTIES: Pay Lexicography, Inc. royalties (negotiable) on a sliding scale based on the cover price of the book. In the publishing industry, it is 10-15% of gross to an author with a raw manuscript that has to be designed, edited, proofread, and prepared for printing. All this has been done for you. In the first year, while you are establishing a viable market for the dictionary and an income base for yourself, Lexicography, Inc. will accept a minimal royalty advance. For subsequent years, a better percentage based on the cover price will have to be negotiated. YOUR PROFITS: You should be able to break even in the first year, thereafter reaping substantial profits servicing markets you have established. WHAT REVIEWERS SAY ABOUT THIS WEBSTER'S: "The User's Webster Dictionary (UWD) is a compact, inexpensive, very usable mass-market paperback dictionary of the everyday vocabulary of North American English.... The coverage of lexemes larger than the word [common idiomatic phrases and sentences such as "The coast is clear"] is extraordinary.... Most English dictionaries enter few of these; one of those that enter the most, Webster's New World Dictionary of American English, Third College Edition (1988), enters or covers only twelve of the same thirty. . . UWD provides users with ready access to needed information about a wide range of words and phrases, in compact and affordable form. With its special attention to collocations, it is an interesting and useful contribution to the resources for answering questions about today's English vocabulary (Edward Gates, Prof. Emeritus, Indiana State University, in Dictionaries, Journal of the Dictionary Society of North America, 2003, pp. 274-280).
